On Monday, January 20, explosions were reported in Russia. Drones may have targeted an aircraft manufacturing plant and areas near the aircraft factory in Kazan.
This was reported by Russian media. They noted that one of the drones struck an empty tank on the territory of the Gorbunov factory.
The Kazan Aircraft Plant named after P. Gorbunov — a subsidiary of PAO "Tupolev" — is one of the largest enterprises in the aviation industry of the Russian Federation, established in 1932 in Kazan, producing strategic bombers Tu-160 as well as civil airliners Tu-204. It is located in the eastern part of the Aviation Manufacturing District of Kazan, and the factory airfield "Borisoglebsk" is also situated within the city limits.
In December 2023, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the plant was subjected to sanctions from European Union countries, as it "produces and repairs strategic missile carriers Tu-160 and long-range bombers Tu-22M3M/Tu-22M3, which are used by the Russian army during missile strikes on Ukraine.
1 2 3Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, a federal subject of the Russian Federation.
The city is located approximately 800 km east of Russia's capital, Moscow.
4There has been no official confirmation regarding the attack on this particular factory. However, around seven o'clock in the morning Kyiv time, the press service of the Tatarstan governor reported: "This morning, there was an attempted attack by enemy drones on industrial enterprises in the republic. A set of protective measures was implemented. As a result, all UAVs were neutralized. There are no casualties or damages. Emergency services continue to work to eliminate the aftermath."
Meanwhile, three airports — in Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, and Izhevsk — are currently not accepting flights due to imposed temporary restrictions.
Russian media also report that a drone flew over the Fuel Reservoirs and JSC "KAPO-Composite" near the "Borisoglebsk" airport.
5Russian propaganda Telegram channels claim that the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched replicas of the Turkish "Bayraktar" — UAVs of the "Lut" aircraft type, which they have already used to attack Tatarstan. The third wave of explosions was heard by Kazan residents around 6:50.
Earlier, "Telegraph" reported that two Russian regions were attacked by "unknown drones" on the night of January 17 to 18. Explosions and fires were recorded in the Kaluga and Tula regions of Russia, and Russian authorities once again stated that "everything was shot down" and blamed the explosions on "drone debris."
