New sanctions are more effective than designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, according to the State Department.

The U.S. State Department believes that new sanctions are more effective than designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The latest restrictions have already resulted in the halting of tankers carrying Russian oil and have made it impossible to circumvent previous sanctions.
Согласно Госдепу, новые санкции оказывают более значительное влияние, чем признание России как государства-спонсора терроризма.

Sanctions are proving to be a more effective means of achieving political objectives regarding Russia than designating it as a state sponsor of terrorism. The latest restrictions are particularly effective in influencing the aggressor nation. This was stated by U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during a briefing, as reported by UNN.

Details

According to him, the number of sanctions already imposed by the U.S. against Russia, especially the recent packages introduced last week and this week, are having significant effects.

Miller highlighted that after the restrictions on Russia's energy sector were implemented, tankers carrying Russian oil began to be halted worldwide, notably off the coast of China.

The State Department representative also mentioned that on Wednesday, January 15, Russia lost the ability to circumvent previously imposed restrictions.

Additionally, Congress has gained further authority to ease sanctions against the aggressor in the future.

Miller further noted that recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism would restrict the activities of international humanitarian organizations and create other consequences that could impact their ability to operate in the region.

Reminder

Three Russian Arctic oil fields are facing significant disruptions due to U.S. sanctions on tankers. These restrictions may lead to a halt in production due to a lack of storage capacity for oil.
