After the election of Donald Trump, Ukraine's prospects for joining NATO have significantly diminished. Reports TCN. This was stated by Kontrakty.UA.
This opinion was expressed by Paul Stars, director of the Center for Preventive Action at the Council on Foreign Relations, an expert on conflict prevention, during a discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).
"The prospect of Ukraine's NATO membership was already minimal before Trump's election. After his election, it has become even more remote," the expert noted.
In his view, President Trump does not support expanding U.S. security commitments to new countries. Therefore, the prospect of Ukraine's membership in the Alliance would likely pose an obstacle to any settlement agreement.
"This does not mean that Ukraine's NATO membership in the future is impossible. But for now, let's not deceive ourselves—this issue will not be resolved anytime soon," Stars emphasized.
It is worth noting that currently, there are two types of security guarantees that NATO countries can offer Ukraine in the context of a peace agreement with Russia.
