A British woman married to a Ukrainian is shocked by her husband's stories about his childhood. She wonders how those born in Ukraine during the 80s and 90s managed to survive at all.
"My husband, being Ukrainian, tells such wild stories about his childhood… I think, how did you even survive?", says Ellie from Britain, who lives in Ukraine and shares her thoughts on her blog.
She added that children in Britain during the 80s and 90s also had more freedom and less parental control than today's kids. However, her Ukrainian husband's tales of his childhood represent "a whole different level."
"Recently he said that when he had lice... his mom poured gasoline on his head, and he sat in the yard with a bag on his head, drenched in gasoline. Then a neighbor walked by, smoking, and his head almost caught fire.", recounted the Ukrainian's wife.
Another childhood story from her husband that astonished the British woman was about how a teacher locked all the students in a classroom on the second floor and went home. The kids had to break a window and climb down the drainpipe from the second floor.
"Little kids, can you imagine? So I think — did I really marry a crazy person? Or was that normal for Ukrainian childhood back then? Was it really like that?", she wonders.
She asked Ukrainians to share their own childhood stories. Commenters shared their own experiences — like how they killed frogs with a big stick, cooked and ate them, how they made explosives from matches, and much more extreme adventures.
Earlier, "Telegraph" reported on the impressions of a Ukrainian refugee in Finland. According to the woman, there is a very strange perception of Ukrainians.
