Canada will retaliate if the U.S. imposes tariffs on its goods, says Trudeau.

Canada is prepared to retaliate if the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian imports. This is a move the American leader intends to implement starting February 1.
Канада ответит ударом, если США введут пошлины на её товары, - заявил Трюдо.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made this statement, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Politico. This information is also shared by Kontrakty.UA.

Trudeau mentioned that Canada can assist Trump in fulfilling his promise of a new "golden age" for America. However, he warned that if the US president imposes tariffs on Canadian goods, Ottawa will retaliate.

"We know that if the United States is going to increase job numbers, production, and economic growth, they will need more energy and resources, everything from lumber and concrete to steel and aluminum, as well as critical minerals that are essential ingredients for the economy of the future," he stated.

He pointed out that Canada provides many of the necessary resources that the American economy will require for growth and prosperity.

Trudeau emphasized that Trump is a skilled negotiator who enjoys keeping his partners slightly off balance. According to him, the Republican's approach "really introduces uncertainty."

"We have been through this before. During President Trump's first term, he announced challenges to our trade relations that we managed to overcome," added the Canadian Prime Minister.

Trump wants to impose tariffs on imports from Canada

US President Donald Trump aims to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods to urge Canada to enhance border control to stop the flow of illegal migrants and curb fentanyl smuggling. However, this move violates the free trade agreement.

Canada has already announced a plan of nearly $1 billion to strengthen border security. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that less than 1% of illegal immigrants and less than 1% of fentanyl enter the US through the Canadian border.

Additionally, Canada previously stated that it is ready to purchase more American goods to avoid the imposition of tariffs.
