The candidate for the chancellorship of Germany, Friedrich Merz, who is considered the main rival of the current government leader Olaf Scholz in the upcoming elections, does not oppose supplying Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. During a discussion at the Munich Security Conference, which was broadcast by “Suspilne”, he stated that such military assistance to Ukraine would need to be coordinated with other countries.
“We must be prepared to supply this [Taurus missiles for Ukraine], but only if we have agreement with our European partners,” said Friedrich Merz, who leads the CDU/CSU political alliance.
The German politician reminded that currently there are at least two countries supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine - France and Great Britain. In his opinion, Ukraine's European partners need to coordinate joint efforts in this direction.
"My personal opinion is that we will supply this equipment to Ukraine, but within agreed European frameworks," he added.
It should be noted that the current Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, previously stated that he would not supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, as American President Donald Trump considers it a "wrong decision" to provide Kyiv with long-range weapons.
