"We have not made a decision on this. Washington is still deciding. Therefore, I hope we will make a decision soon," responded John Kelly, the coordinator of the U.S. permanent mission to the UN.
The American official added that he is currently awaiting a response from the U.S. regarding the vote to support this resolution.
"We will need to see what instructions we receive from Washington. So, I hope they will come soon," Kelly said.
UN Resolution
The UN resolution on the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and once again demands that Russia withdraw its troops.
According to Reuters, the document "calls for de-escalation, the quickest possible cessation of hostilities, and a peaceful resolution to the war against Ukraine... in accordance with the UN Charter and international law."
Additionally, the UN resolution reminds of "the necessity for full compliance with the relevant resolutions adopted in response to the aggression against Ukraine."
It is reported that over 50 countries are the authors of the document. The resolution for the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is set to be voted on by the UN General Assembly on Monday, February 24.
U.S. Position on the Resolution
It is worth noting that the day before, it became known that the U.S. has declined to co-sponsor the UN resolution project dedicated to the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine for the first time since the war began.
This was reported by Reuters, noting that in previous years, the United States consistently acted as a co-sponsor of such resolutions in support of a just peace in Ukraine. However, according to a source from the agency, it was unclear when the deadline for supporting the resolution project would expire. Therefore, Washington may still change its mind..
