Trump's executive order includes a directive for the government to use the term "sex" instead of "gender," as well as a requirement that government-issued identification documents, including passports and visas, be based on what he describes as "immutable biological classification of a person as male or female."
Hours after taking office, Trump swiftly began fulfilling his campaign promises to reverse policies enacted by the Biden administration that prioritized implementing measures to ensure diversity throughout the federal government.
Trump rescinded 78 executive orders signed by Joe Biden, including at least a dozen measures aimed at promoting racial equality and combating discrimination against gay and transgender individuals.
Among the rescinded orders, Trump annulled two signed by Biden on his first day in office four years ago: one related to racial equality for underprivileged communities and the other aimed at combating discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
Trump also revoked other orders designed to assist Black individuals, Latinos, Native Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders.
"This week, I will also end the government's policy aimed at attempting to socially implement race and gender into all aspects of public and private life," Trump stated in his inaugural address.
He announced plans to create a society that does not differentiate based on skin color and is merit-based. "From this day forward, the official policy of the United States government will be that there are only two genders: male and female," Trump said.
Public Reaction
Civil rights and human rights advocates, along with relevant organizations, immediately pledged to defend minorities and challenge Trump's plans.
"We refuse to back down or be intimidated. We are not going anywhere and will fight against these harmful provisions with all our might," said Kelly Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ rights group in the U.S.
Human rights defenders stated that any measures to restrict transgender rights and diminish the rights of transgender individuals enacted by Trump would be a blow to the tireless efforts to ensure fair policies and undermine the progress made in combating systemic biases that have deprived marginalized groups of equal opportunities for decades.
It is worth noting that Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders on his first day as president on January 20, addressing energy, immigration policy, national security, and reversing several decisions made by the Biden administration. These documents do not require Congressional approval, allowing for swift implementation.
