The initiator of the bill is the parliamentary faction "New Unity," and its aim is to prevent harmful and dangerous activities from the perspective of national interests, as well as to avoid circumventing sanctions.
The bill pertains to both citizens of aggressor countries and legal entities established in Russia and Belarus, as well as those whose actual beneficiaries are citizens of these states.
Restrictions will not apply to individuals who have obtained permanent resident status in the European Union or a permanent residence permit in Latvia in accordance with the requirements of the "Immigration Law."
"In the context of hybrid warfare, to protect our democratic legal state and strengthen the security of our country, it is essential to incorporate necessary tools into the legal framework. We are acting preventively to eliminate any possibilities of interference from Russia and Belarus in our internal affairs," explained Lauma Paegkalna, the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Justice.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia plans to amend the national security law. The new provisions will prohibit citizens of Russia and Belarus from holding positions in the management of critical infrastructure.
