NATO plans to offer Trump a compromise regarding his claims on Greenland, according to media reports.

NATO is planning to present a compromise regarding Greenland to U.S. President Donald Trump. The Alliance hopes this will help ease tensions surrounding discussions about the island.
В НАТО планируют предложить Трампу компромисс из-за его интереса к Гренландии, сообщают СМИ.

This is reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing Handelsblatt. Information has also been provided by Kontrakty.UA.

Sources within NATO informed DPA that the Alliance aims to propose a significant expansion of military presence in the Arctic to Trump.

Greenland is crucial due to its rich natural resources and as a base for military control over the Arctic. Furthermore, shipping routes are becoming increasingly accessible, at least during the summer, as climate change intensifies.

According to media reports, this initiative is being discussed with Trump during informal negotiations. The basis for enhancing NATO's presence in the Arctic may stem from new defense plans adopted in 2023. These are classified documents that envision strengthening deterrence and defense capabilities even in the far north.

Currently, the U.S. is already utilizing the Pituffik space base in Greenland. This base supports missile attack warning systems, missile defense, and space surveillance missions, among other functions. Danish military forces are also present in Greenland.

The publication adds that discussions regarding Greenland pose risks for NATO. The Alliance must be concerned about its reputation, and on the other hand, it would be disastrous if the U.S. were to withdraw from NATO over such a dispute.

The Greenland Dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his desire to purchase Greenland during his first term in the White House. After winning the 2024 election, he revived these discussions.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the island is not for sale. According to the Financial Times, Frederiksen and Trump had a conversation prior to the inauguration. Sources from the publication reported that Trump was "aggressive and confrontational" regarding the Greenland issue.

Recently, the U.S. president expressed confidence that the island would be under the control of the United States.
