Concerning the elections in Ukraine during the war, there are two key points. The first relates to the functioning of government bodies amidst the conflict. The second point is historical.
This was stated by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Theodoros Russopoulos, in an interview with "RBK-Ukraine". This information was reported by Kontrakty.UA.
"My position is to refrain from interfering in this internal policy. Political life continues in Ukraine. The Parliament is operational, and sessions are proceeding very smoothly. Of course, parliamentarians from all parties participate in our Assembly," he stated.
Russopoulos emphasized that the Verkhovna Rada is functioning, and parliamentarians from all parties attend PACE meetings. According to him, there has not been a single Ukrainian opposition parliamentarian who has raised the issue of elections in Ukraine.
"It's easy to destroy, but hard to build. However, we are trying to find some solution in parallel with the peace process, which the Ukrainian people will prioritize," he said.
The PACE president also explained the historical aspect regarding elections during wartime.
"I do not recall that when Winston Churchill was leading Great Britain during that time of war, there were elections. Rest assured, there were none," the PACE president reminded.
As previously reported, the Verkhovna Rada decided to extend martial law in Ukraine until May 9. However, there are speculations in the parliamentary corridors that if a ceasefire can be achieved, martial law may be lifted, and presidential elections could be held this autumn.
