Such an opinion was expressed by retired British General Francis Richard Dannatt during a broadcast on the "Kyiv" television channel.
He is convinced that the Russian army will not retreat voluntarily, as Putin continues to believe in his victory.
"Putin continues to believe that Russia is powerful and that it is winning this war. And he does not want to make any concessions at all. Frankly, I cannot see how Russian forces can willingly withdraw from the territories in eastern Ukraine that they have already occupied for nearly the last three years," Dannatt stated.
In his view, the only alternative in this case may be pressure from America and Europe, as well as assistance to Ukraine to continue fighting in this war.
"I think that the best we can hope for at this time is a ceasefire, a halt to hostilities at current positions, and the continuation of negotiations. I believe these are medium-term goals. And that is all that Trump can achieve from Vladimir Putin," the British general believes.
