The United States is considering automatic NATO membership for Ukraine. This option is being discussed in case Russia violates the peace agreements, should they be reached.
This was reported by NBC citing its own sources. Four American officials stated that such an option is under consideration.
"Such a move would address the key concern of Ukraine and its allies — that Russia could regroup and invade the country again," said the four officials, according to the article.
It should be noted that on February 13, U.S. President Donald Trump stated during a media interaction that he does not find Ukraine's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance "practical." He added that he is "not opposed" to taking the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO off the negotiation agenda.
Prior to this, during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the "Ramstein" format on February 12, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan described Ukraine's NATO membership as unrealistic. According to him, peace in Ukraine must include security guarantees that "should not rely on NATO membership but must be supported by capable European and non-European forces."
However, following this, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Cole stated that despite all the recent statements from both Trump and his administration members, the option for Ukraine to join NATO "remains on the table." He mentioned that this issue, along with the matter of returning Ukraine to its 1991 borders, will be discussed during negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, the U.S., and European countries.
Earlier, "Telegraph" reported on what conditions might be offered to Ukraine in negotiations to end the war. This includes not only a refusal to join NATO.
