The wife of Syrian dictator Assad, Asma, may not survive: here’s what we know about her condition.

Leukemia has returned after a period of remission.
Супруга сирийского диктатора Асада, Асма, может не выжить: последние данные о её состоянии вызывают серьезные опасения.

The wife of former Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, Asma, who was born in the United Kingdom, is seriously ill with leukemia. Doctors have given her a 50% chance of survival.

This was reported by The Telegraph on Wednesday, December 25. According to the publication, Asma Assad has been isolated to prevent her from contracting infectious diseases, as she has experienced a relapse of blood cancer. She is prohibited from being in the same room with other people.

"Asma is dying. She cannot be in the same room with anyone," said a source who spoke directly with a family representative.

In May 2024, Assad's administration announced that the dictator's wife had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia – an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and blood. Previously, the woman had undergone treatment for breast cancer, and in August 2019, it was declared that she was completely healthy. It is believed that leukemia has returned after a period of remission.

According to media reports, the 49-year-old wife of Assad flew to Moscow for treatment shortly before the Kremlin convinced her husband to flee Syria amid the rapid advance of rebels. For the past six months, she has primarily been cared for by her father, a well-known cardiologist—first in the UAE, then in Moscow. The Assads have three children, the oldest of whom is 22 years old. At the time of the regime's downfall, the young man was studying mathematics at Moscow State University and defended his thesis in Russian.

Asma expressed dissatisfaction with living conditions in Russia and requested a divorce from Bashar Assad in order to move to London (she holds a British passport). In response, the authorities stated that they are "under sanctions and are not a welcome presence in the United Kingdom." Russian officials denied this information.
