Countries of NATO have not supported the idea of deploying Alliance troops in Ukraine, despite the involvement of other nations in the war on Russia's side. Reports TCN. This was communicated by Kontrakty.UA.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte shared this information, as reported by "Voice of America."
"I think it would be unwise to do so," Rutte responded when asked about the possibility of NATO troops entering Ukraine due to Russia's recruitment of soldiers from North Korea.
According to him, the Alliance does not wish to face full confrontation with Russia and become a direct party to the conflict.
"There is no desire to have a full confrontation, where member countries of the Alliance become a party to the conflict. I don’t think that’s wise. What needs to be done is to ensure that Ukrainians can continue this fight, to ensure they find themselves in a position of strength when it comes to negotiations," the NATO Secretary General believes.
In his view, when Ukraine has a stronger position, NATO and newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump will be able to bring dictator Putin to the negotiation table.
"First and foremost, we need to ensure that Ukraine is in a position of strength, and we must do this collectively... So, Ukraine must be at the negotiation table, but they (the Ukrainians – Ed.) will only do so when they feel they can gain something from it, and right now they are indeed in a disadvantageous position," Rutte says.
The NATO Secretary General also assured that he agrees with Trump that Europeans need to do more to support Ukraine in the war.
Earlier, Mark Rutte mentioned whether NATO with Trump could bring Putin to the negotiation table. He also stated that there is a need to "change the trajectory" of the war in Ukraine.
