Language activist Oleksandr Leonenko registered a petition on February 17 to ban Russian music on popular streaming platforms. The initiative quickly garnered 28,000 signatures—a record number in just three days. TSN reports. This was announced by Kontrakty.UA.
The activist informed that he received a response to his inquiry from the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
The Ministry stated that they have reviewed the petition which was submitted to them by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the agency noted that the issue of blocking Russian-language music content, including songs by Ukrainian artists, will be handled by the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting.
As explained by the Ministry of Culture, it is the National Council that has the authority to negotiate with representatives of streaming platforms that are not under Ukrainian jurisdiction. They can also enter into relevant agreements or sign memorandums regarding content regulation.
“We are keeping our finger on the pulse and believe in a positive resolution of the situation,” Oleksandr Leonenko commented.
It remains an open question whether a decision will be made on the complete ban of Russian music and how this will be implemented in practice.
Recall that recently in Kyiv, visitors at one of the nightclubs were entertained by Russian-language music.
