On February 19, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the trident as the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine. It is designated as the main element of the Great State Coat of Arms of Ukraine. Writes TSN. This information is reported by Kontrakty.UA.
The History of the Ukrainian Coat of Arms — Why the Trident
The trident has a long history. It first appeared during the time of the Rurik dynasty and became a coat of arms during the period of the Ukrainian People's Republic, symbolizing the unity of Ukrainian lands. The Soviet Union prohibited the Ukrainian trident, as in the 20th century it embodied the struggle of our compatriots for independence.
On June 24, 1991, a competition was announced for the creation of the State Coat of Arms. Over 200 designs were considered, and 192 of them featured the trident. The winning entry was a collaborative work by historian-heraldist Andriy Hrechylo and artist Ivan Turetsky, executed in the style of Prince Volodymyr the Great.
