"The South American country has agreed to all the terms set by President Trump, including the unlimited acceptance of all illegal migrants from Colombia who are returning from the United States. Specifically, this includes transportation on American military aircraft, without restrictions or delays," stated White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt.
She also added that the order regarding tariffs and sanctions will remain unsigned "unless Colombia violates this agreement."
Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro retweeted the White House statement shortly after it was published.
Furthermore, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed that both countries have overcome a diplomatic "stalemate," stating that Colombia will continue to accept deported citizens from the U.S. He also mentioned plans to travel to Washington in the coming days with the Colombian ambassador to the United States to ensure the agreements between the two countries are implemented.
"We will continue to accept Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them dignified conditions," Murillo said.
Mutual Understanding
It is worth noting that previously, Colombia had refused to accept flights carrying migrants from the U.S. In response, Trump ordered sanctions against this country and imposed a 25% tariff on its goods. Additionally, the U.S. embassy in Colombia halted visa processing.
In turn, Colombian President Gustavo Petro instructed the Ministry of Trade to raise tariffs on imports from the U.S. by 25% as well.
