The former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, believes that the Russian dictator Putin made a "fatal mistake" when he decided to invade Ukraine. TSN reports. This information was shared by Kontrakty.UA.
She made this statement during the presentation of her memoirs "Freedom. Memories 1954-2021," as reported by Ukrinform.
She stated that it is in the interest of Western countries for Russia not to win the war and for Ukraine to remain an independent nation.
At the same time, she emphasized that one should not underestimate the Russian dictator who, in her opinion, despite overestimating his military capabilities, is resolute in his brutality.
Merkel underscores the necessity of thinking about diplomatic solutions alongside providing assistance to Ukraine and being prepared for diplomatic initiatives.
"They must be well thought out so that they can be presented at the right moment. When that moment arrives, it shouldn't be just Ukraine making the decision, but exclusively with those who support it… Then what we desire will happen – for Russia not to achieve victory and for Ukraine to have a peaceful future as a sovereign state," the book states.
Recall that it was previously reported that Merkel identified the "reason" why Putin started the war against Ukraine.
Additionally, we earlier informed that Yushchenko explained why he feels offended by the former Chancellor of Germany.
