Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Ukraine and its supporters to consider diplomatic avenues for ending the war initiated by Russia. TSN reports. This was communicated by Kontrakty.UA.
She made this statement during a broadcast on the channel ZDF, as reported by the DPA agency.
Merkel emphasized that Russia must not win this war, as it is crucial not only for Ukraine but also for Europe as a whole. "It is not only in Ukraine's interest but also in our interest that Putin does not win this war," the Chancellor stated.
Merkel mentioned that during her tenure as Chancellor, she took all necessary measures to prevent such escalation. She added that the invasion of Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law.
However, Merkel also stated that "diplomatic solutions must always be considered in parallel." She highlighted that discussions about these solutions do not need to happen right now but should occur when the appropriate time comes.
Merkel also expressed her support for the actions taken by the German government to assist Ukraine.
"I support everything that the international community is doing to put Ukraine in a good position," the ex-Chancellor declared.
Recall that earlier Merkel referred to a "fatal mistake" made by Putin.
