EU ambassadors have approved the 16th sanctions package against Russia, set to be adopted by the EU Council on February 24th.

Ambassadors from European Union member states have agreed on the 16th sanctions package against Russia, which is set to be finalized on Monday, February 24, during the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
Послы ЕС одобрили 16-й пакет санкций против РФ, который будет принят Советом ЕС 24 февраля.

This is reported by Interfax-Ukraine, referencing a European diplomat. This information is also provided by Kontrakty.UA.

“Just now, COREPER (the Committee of Permanent Representatives) has approved the 16th sanctions package. It will be adopted by the ministers on Monday at the Foreign Affairs Council, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” he stated.

The diplomat noted that this decision is a “clear signal from the EU: our stance remains unchanged.”

“We continue to support Ukraine and persist in applying sanctions against the Russian aggressor because it is the right thing to do, upholding international rules and order, and protecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he emphasized.

According to Financial Times, the sanctions will target Russian aluminum. Additionally, sanctions on the export of Russian oil will be strengthened.

Specifically, 13 more banks and 73 tankers from the “shadow fleet” will also be sanctioned.

“I welcome the agreements regarding our 16th sanctions package. The EU is intensifying its focus on a greater number of vessels from Putin's shadow fleet and introducing new import and export bans. We aim to maintain pressure on the Kremlin,” wrote European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
