Analysts from ISW explain why Putin is unlikely to make compromises in negotiations.

Moscow has clearly identified the "root causes" of the war in Ukraine.
Путин не пойдет на компромиссы в переговорах: аналитики ISW объяснили причину.

The dictator of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, is not interested in any compromises during the upcoming peace negotiations regarding the cessation of the war against Ukraine, as reported by TSN and Kontrakty.UA.

This is highlighted in a new report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

American analysts reached this conclusion while examining the negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump, the "fuhrer" Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The ISW emphasizes that the official statement from the Kremlin indicates that the Russian dictator stressed to the American president the necessity of "eliminating the root causes" of the war and that Putin "agreed with Trump" that "long-term resolution can be achieved through peace talks."

"Russian officials clearly defined the 'root causes' of the war as alleged violations by NATO of its commitments not to expand eastward near the Russian border. This indicates that the Kremlin remains committed to imposing its will and security interests on the U.S. and Europe and is not interested in compromising on this demand," American experts reported.

The report also mentions that Trump confirmed his phone conversation with Zelensky. According to the White House leader, they discussed the war and Zelensky's upcoming meeting with U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference. In turn, the Ukrainian president stated that his American counterpart shared details of his conversation with Putin.

Furthermore, the Institute referred to the prospect of exchanging the territory of Russia's Kursk region for Ukrainian territory, citing statements from Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev that this would not happen.

"Medvedev's and Peskov's statements further confirm ISW's assessment that Putin is not interested in any compromises during the upcoming negotiations and will seek to achieve only a peace agreement that meets all his demands regarding Ukraine," ISW emphasizes.

As reported, on February 12, U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. They agreed on joint efforts to end the war in Ukraine and potential mutual visits.
