Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, February 26, Trump stated that he would soon announce the details of a new tariff plan against the European Union.
"We have made a decision, and we will announce it very soon. It will be 25%," said the President of the United States.
Trump did not provide additional details but mentioned automakers and indicated that tariffs would be applied "in general".
"This will concern cars and everything else," Trump noted.
As a reminder, the EU is the third-largest trading partner of the United States along with China.
The President of the United States also mentioned that next week he will impose a 25% tariff against the two largest US partners—Canada and Mexico.
Previously, Trump had repeatedly announced the introduction of tariffs against major trading partners of the US. However, he continuously postponed their implementation for Canada and Mexico.
Europe's Reaction
As a reminder, during a recent visit to the US, French President Emmanuel Macron advised his American counterpart Donald Trump not to start a trade war with Europe. Instead, he urged focusing on China.
The French president also made it clear to Trump that Europe would not be able to increase defense spending as the US demands in the event of a trade war.
Furthermore, the EU promised to respond to Trump in case a trade war breaks out. For several months, the EU has been working on a set of potential countermeasures in response to tariffs imposed by Trump, although the details of the list have been kept under wraps. Following this, a representative of the EU stated that the bloc would "respond firmly" if Trump imposes tariffs.
"If the US and Europe start a trade war, then China will be the one laughing," emphasized Kaja Kallas, head of the EU's foreign affairs department.
