This is reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Financial Times. Reports are also coming from Kontrakty.UA.
The publication notes that three unnamed sources have stated Trump’s intention to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine.
According to FT, this move will bolster other Western countries that are deeply concerned about their ability to support and defend Ukraine without Washington's backing.
Journalists report that in early December, high-ranking British officials traveled to Washington to familiarize themselves with Trump's plans regarding Ukraine.
After their visit, they conveyed that the US president-elect is against Ukraine's NATO membership and wants an end to the war. However, he believes that supplying weapons to Kyiv after a ceasefire will ensure "peace through strength."
Additionally, two sources told the publication that Trump aims to demand NATO countries to more than double their defense spending. Currently, Alliance nations are required to allocate 2% of GDP for defense each year, but the US president-elect wants to raise this figure to 5%.
Notably, only 23 out of 32 NATO members allocate 2% of their GDP for defense.
Trump's Position on the War in Ukraine
It is worth recalling that the US president-elect, Donald Trump, has assured that he wants a swift end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. In particular, he promised to end the war within the first 24 hours of his presidency.
Trump also promised to speak with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to bring the war to a close.
A visit to Kyiv by Keith Kellogg is scheduled for January; he will assume the role of special representative for Ukraine after Trump's inauguration.
As stated by the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Georgiy Tikhiy, Ukraine wants to convey its perspective on a just peace to Kellogg.
