The issue of Ukraine's potential NATO membership cannot be excluded from the negotiations regarding the "end of the war". The cessation of hostilities in Ukraine could lead to a situation reminiscent of that in Afghanistan in 2021. It is unlikely that anyone wants to see a repeat of such events. Reports TSN. This was reported by Kontrakty.UA.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made this statement in an interview with ARD.
Commenting on the statements from the United States regarding Ukraine's inability to join the North Atlantic Alliance, the Ukrainian president asserted that such processes cannot simply be removed from the agenda. The tactics that involved "a lack of respect for human life" led to the tragedy in Afghanistan.
"You can't just take this off the table. It doesn't work that way. I don't think anyone is interested in Afghanistan 2.0," Zelensky emphasized.
The tactics that included "a lack of respect for human life" resulted in the tragedy in Afghanistan. This refers to the decision made by the U.S. and Western allies in 2020, during Donald Trump's presidency, to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. This was implemented under President Joe Biden in 2021. At that time, the U.S. had to chaotically evacuate its forces from the country, while the Taliban quickly seized the capital, Kabul, and took control of Afghanistan.
"So there is a precedent for what happens when someone ends something without careful consideration and retreats very quickly," he stated.
It is worth noting that earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that he would not remove the country's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance from the negotiating table under any circumstances. According to the president, it is currently the Russian "fuhrer" who "has the decisive word on who gets to be in NATO and who does not."
