The publication quotes a statement from the Ministry of Commerce of China. The agency claims that the imposition of tariffs by the United States seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
China has declared its firm opposition to the new tariffs and promised to take appropriate "countermeasures."
"In response to the wrongful actions of the United States, China will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization and implement countermeasures to protect its own rights and interests," the statement reads.
The Ministry of Commerce of China urged the United States to "correct its erroneous actions, compromise, acknowledge its issues, engage in open negotiations, strengthen cooperation, and resolve differences based on equality, mutual benefit, and mutual respect."
Trump's Trade Tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump announced upon returning to the White House that he would impose additional tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, China, and EU countries.
On Saturday, February 1, Trump ordered a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on goods from China, starting Tuesday. Economists believe that such a move could provoke a trade war.
In response, Canada implemented a 25% tariff on American goods.
