"We have not made a decision on this yet. Washington is still deliberating. Therefore, I hope we will reach a decision soon," stated John Kelly, the coordinator of the U.S. permanent mission to the UN.
The American official further noted that he is currently awaiting a response from the U.S. regarding the vote in support of this resolution.
"We will need to see what instructions we receive from Washington. So, I hope they come soon," Kelly remarked.
UN Resolution
The UN resolution marking the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion reaffirms Ukraine's territorial integrity and again demands that Russia withdraw its troops.
According to Reuters, the document "calls for de-escalation, an immediate cessation of hostilities, and a peaceful resolution to the war against Ukraine... in accordance with the UN Charter and international law."
Additionally, the UN resolution reminds of "the necessity for full compliance with the relevant resolutions adopted in response to the aggression against Ukraine."
It is reported that the document has been authored by over 50 countries. The resolution regarding the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is set to be put to a vote in the UN General Assembly on Monday, February 24.
U.S. Position on the Resolution
It is worth noting that recently it was revealed that the U.S. is declining to co-sponsor the UN resolution for the first time since the war began, which pertains to the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Reuters reported this, indicating that in previous years, the United States consistently acted as a co-sponsor of such resolutions supporting a just peace in Ukraine. However, according to the agency's source, it was unclear when the deadline for supporting the resolution project would expire. Therefore, Washington may still reconsider its stance.
